How to take close-ups pictures

by james on Feb.03, 2012, under Tips & Tutorials

Close up photos are one of the most challenging photos that you can take because there are quite a lot of elements that you must consider. First of all, you will need to identify how close your lens should focus on and whether or not you need to invoke the zoom function. While most would tell you not to use the zoom as it is more illusion than real, a certain use of this function could sometimes work wonders.

After all, taking close-ups mean that you have access to the subject and there is actually no need for the zoom function. In situations where the lenses you are using are not able to focus close enough, then you can consider using ‘extension tubes’ which means that it actually ‘extends’ the lens from the film plane. Another option that you can use is close-up lens which can be attached to the front of the lens. This will help you to evade the use of extra lighting and it is one of the best options if you are taking close-up photos.

From there, you can now look at which part of the object you are focusing on. Whether it is a bowl of rice or a flower, there must be an area that you will focus your lens to because at this distance it is not easy to focus on every part of the subject. This will then throw you into another challenge where you will need to decide what type of lighting you will require. You will not be able to use any wide aperture settings if you want to focus on the whole subject. The rule of thumb here perhaps would be to focus on the parts which are nearest to the lens and to allow those which are furthest to be out of focus.
